Terrace Surry Hills

Location: Surry Hills

Cost: $1.2M

This project renovates a long and narrow terrace house in Surry Hills, carefully reorganising the interior to create a sequence of spaces filled with light and openness.

At the front of the house, a bedroom and bathroom are positioned on the ground floor, maintaining the traditional arrangement of the original terrace. Moving deeper into the plan, the circulation of the house is defined by a sculptural suspended staircase. Constructed from perforated metal mesh, the stair allows natural light to filter through its surface, creating a luminous vertical element that connects the two levels while preserving the sense of openness within the narrow plan.

Beyond the stair, the house opens into a generous living area where the kitchen and living room form a continuous social space. A sculptural kitchen island anchors the room, acting as both a functional workspace and a central gathering point for everyday life.

Upstairs, the upper level accommodates two bedrooms and a main bedroom suite with its own ensuite, providing a calm and private retreat above the living spaces.

Through a careful balance of spatial clarity, light and contemporary materials, the project transforms the traditional terrace into a comfortable and modern home suited to contemporary urban living.
