Terrace Newtown

Location: Newtown

Cost: 1.6M

This project transforms a traditional terrace house in Newtown through a contemporary renovation and extension that brings light, openness and modern living to a compact urban home.

Like many terrace houses, the original dwelling was characterised by narrow rooms and a limited connection to the outdoors. The design reorganises the interior to create a more fluid sequence of spaces, allowing natural light and air to move deeper into the house.

At the centre of the project, a double-height space is introduced in the middle of the plan. The surrounding rooms open towards this volume, allowing light to filter through the different levels and creating visual connections across the home. This vertical space becomes the heart of the house, organising daily life around a shared and luminous interior.

The relationship between interior and exterior is carefully reimagined, with the living spaces opening towards the garden so that the landscape becomes an extension of the house.

The material palette reinforces the dialogue between old and new. Concrete floors, whitewashed existing brick walls and natural timber finishes create a calm and tactile interior that feels both contemporary and grounded in the character of the original terrace.

On the site lane, a curved wall designed around an existing tree creates a small moment of generosity toward the street, forming a built-in seating bench for passers-by and quietly connecting the house to the life of the neighbourhood.

The result is a compact terrace house that feels open, connected and generous, ready for contemporary life.
