Terrace Chippendale
Location: Chippendale
Cost: $1M
Terrace Chippendale is a careful transformation of a narrow Victorian terrace into a bright, flexible and contemporary home while respecting the character of the original building within the surrounding area of Chippendale.
Like many terrace houses, the original home suffered from limited natural light, poor ventilation and small disconnected rooms. The renovation reimagines the interior as a sequence of open yet adaptable spaces that allow light, air and daily life to flow naturally through the house.
A central courtyard opens completely to the living spaces, bringing sunlight deep into the plan and creating a natural connection between indoors and outdoors. Carefully placed mirrors amplify light and space, giving the home a sense of openness far beyond its compact footprint.
The kitchen was designed as a multifunctional social space, featuring a seamless induction cooking surface integrated into the benchtop so the island can be used equally for cooking, dining or gathering with friends.
Throughout the project, existing materials and building elements were carefully reused where possible, extending the life of the original house while reducing waste.
Terrace Chippendale has received multiple architecture awards and has been published internationally, becoming a recognised example of how historic terrace houses can be carefully transformed for contemporary living.
